The festival of December 8th

The Fete des Lumieres de Lyon (Lyon Festival of Lights) is an amazing show of lights that originated years ago as a religious celebration.  In 1642, clerics and prominent citizens of the city decided to pay homage to the Virgin Mary each year if the plague epidemic came to an end.  However, the lights have only been a part of these ceremonies since December 8th, 1852.  This event is a resounding success every year and focuses on the lavish and innovative light show in the picturesque streets of Lyon.

Lights over Lyon

The December 8th Festival brings together several million visitors each year, and over the decades, has become one of the most popular French events.  It is a tradition for inhabitants of Lyon to place a single candle called a «lumignon» behind the thick glass of their windows.  The Festival of Lights of Lyon takes place over 4 days and an exciting program of events is available.
